FAQ’s

What makes an open-faced sandwich?

An open-faced sandwich is made by stacking sandwich ingredients on top of one piece of bread, rather than ‘sandwiching’ it between two. The ratio of toppings to bread is also different, as the open sandwich allows for more ingredients to be placed on top. Open-faced sandwiches can be served fresh or toasted, depending on the recipe.

What is a Swedish open sandwich called?

A Swedish open sandwich is called Smörgås and is made as a simple snack using a thin layer of bread as a base. They’re eaten for either breakfast or lunch, and can be topped with a wide range of ingredients, from cheese, to seafood, to eggs, cucumber and more. Smörgås can often be confused with Smørrebrød, which is the Danish version of a simple open sandwich.

Why is it called an open sandwich?

An open sandwich is simply named to distinguish it from other sandwiches, especially closed sandwiches. Unlike an open sandwich, a closed sandwich has its fillings and toppings between two pieces of bread. Open face sandwiches can also have other names depending on the recipe.
