When Bailey Armstrong joined Bakers Delight straight out school, he did not expect to be on the verge of owning his own bakery just six years later. However, through hard work and plenty of support from Bakers Delight, Bailey has gone into business for himself.
“I was always interested in baking and started out with a sales role at Bakers Delight Margate (Queensland) straight out of school,” said Bailey. “It wasn’t until I was offered the opportunity to do some weekend baking at Mango Hill that my interest in baking really took off so I went into it full time as an apprentice.”
It didn’t take long for Bailey to realise that baking was a passion for him. Soon he began absorbing as much knowledge as he could from others within the network by moving to Bakers Delight Currimundi and then finishing his apprenticeship at The Gap.
In 2019, his commitment and talent were formally recognised when he was named a Gillespie Award winner (Bakers Delight’s internal talent recognition program) and offered a scholarship. It was here that Tim Pitt, Franchisee at Bakers Delight Currimundi became a mentor to Bailey.
“My experience at Currimundi was crucial to my professional development,” said Bailey. “I actually lived with Tim for a while and he really encouraged me to keep building my knowledge and aim to become a franchisee myself one day.”
“Tim started giving me more and more responsibility
at Currimundi so I could get a real feel for working
on the business as opposed to just working in the
business and soon enough, my confidence grew.”
A few years on, Bailey says he is still learning (particularly the ups and downs of managing staff) but the additional support and encouragement he has received from Tim and his Regional and Area Managers has put him in a strong position to take the next step into business ownership.
“I’ve had some amazing support from the Bakers Delight team along the way. In fact Marty (Regional Manager) reached out to me long before this current opportunity came up to offer his ongoing support to help me reach my professional goals.”
Today, Bailey is the Bakery Operator at Bakers Delight Aspley – the final step before he buys the business for himself.
“Knowing I can call on other franchisees like Tim or my Area Managers at any time for support and advice has given me the confidence to finally take the leap and purchase my own bakery.”
“I feel like the last six years has prepared me for this moment and I am finally putting it all into practice in my own business.”
